Many of you might recall the post and summary I made a few weeks ago concerning ArcGIS performance. I have been working with ESRI to resolve the problems I was having since that time. I would like to share that I have made remarkable progress and am convinced that ArcGIS can be used productively. For everyone out there that has experienced the 'slowness' of ArcGIS, there is definitely hope.
ArcGIS is a more complex GIS software that requires more thought about GIS design and administration. There are a number of things that a GIS administrator can do to ArcMap, ArcCatalog and data to greatly enhance performance. For instance, the GIS data format (shapefiles, coverages, personal geodatabases, SDE layers) can impact the speed at which editing ocurrs in ArcMap. A GIS administrator needs to assess issues like this to optimize ArcGIS.
Many of you probably want me to describe what I did to improve ArcGIS performance. I will first refer you to an ESRI document found at http://arconline.esri.com/arconline/whitepapers/ao_/ai8_tuning.html. There is a good chance that you have already been through this document and it may not of worked. There are several things you can do beyond what is on this white paper. You will be dissappointed when I say that I am not going to do a summary beyond the current white paper.
The discussions surrounding ArcGIS performance has been watched closely by ESRI on ArcGIS and ArcVB. ESRI wants to get down to the bottom of the problem. This product has gone through rigorous testing, but the real test is when it gets in the hands of users. There seems to be a 'gap' between ESRI and the general user community with performance. Users are saying its too slow and ESRI says they can't duplicate what the user community is encountering.
I worked with ESRI to close that gap. I gave them the detailed feedback they needed to figure out the solution. I highly suggest that if you are having performance problems that you write down as much detail as you can about the environment you were working in (data formats, commands, if you were in edit mode, on the network, etc...) Call ESRI and relay this information to them. Send them your data to see if they can duplicate it. They want your feedback, the more thorough the better. That is how the gap gets closed.
ESRI has told me that they are going to update the white paper I mentioned above to include suggestions they gave me to work out my problems. That is why I am not going to make a summation- it is not, and shouldn't be, my responsibility. I urge you not to contact me for answers until the new white paper is made available. After that, I will be happy to discuss this issue further.
I reassure you that ArcGIS can be optimized for quick performance.
Regards,
Shane
