Intro Message
The GIS and Health listserve sponsored by the Northwest Center for Public
Health Practice at the University of Washington is being set up initially
to start a discussion about applications, GIS based public health
studies, technical, organizational, policy and funding issues around
using GIS for public health matters in WA State. In short, the goal is to
see how best to apply GIS in solving public health problems whether in
Washington State or elsewhere.

We strongly encourage people interested in GIS as applied to public
health whether actually doing GIS work or not to participate and listen
from anywhere in the world. What is going on in Washington State may be
useful to others and vice versa. The working language will be English,
but responses in other languages will be accepted. We need input from
anyone who has an answer or point of view.

The listserve will be monitored and if discussions get too long or
technical to interest most participants, then we will encourage the
discussion to move off the listserve and continue privately until an
answer or resolution is obtained at which point I will circulate the
relevant results or a summary.

Of course, all conversations must remain civil and polite. We reserve the
right to edit responses or encourage the sender to do the same.

The moderator for the list is Dick Hoskins. His email is
rhoskins@u.washington.edu or reh0303@hub.doh.wa.gov. If you have any
questions about GIS and public health, please direct them to him or the
list itself. The list manager is Laura Schubert at the Northwest Center
for Public Health Practice. Her email address is lschub@u.washington.edu.
If you have any questions about how the list operates, please contact her.

User's Guide: What follows is some useful information on how to get the
most out of this listserv. This list is run using LISTPROC software at
the university of washington. We have included a brief explanation of how
the listserv software works from your end, as well as some useful commands
that you can use to customize how you receive messages from the list. The
full documentation for the LISTPROC software is available online at:

ADDRESSES YOU NEED TO KNOW

-- Posting address for WAPHGIS is:

    waphgis@u.washington.edu

To post to the list, send a message to waphgis@u.washingotn.edu .
A message posted to this address will be seen by all list subscribers.
Hence, this is not the appropriate address for requesting changes in mail
options or with help in using LISTPROC. Do NOT send List commands to the
Posting address above because people will get really mad at you!! Read on
for the correct address for List commands.

-- LISTPROC address:

    listproc@u.washington.edu

This is the address to use for automated LISTPROC commands such as putting
your mail on hold, changing from/to Digest mode, etc., as described in the
sections below. All messages to this address are handled by a program and
are never seen by a human, so any additional comments, etc. will go
unheard. This is obviously the preferred method for setting mail options,
unsubscribing, etc., (since you don't bother a person doing it). Do NOT
use the above address to post messages that are intended for the
subscribers to WAPHGIS.

-- Help Desk address:

    lschub@u.washington.edu

Unlike with the LISTPROC address, this is the address of a human being,
namely Laura Schubert, the list manager, who will help you with your
LISTPROC problems.

Help Message
To get more information on how to use this service, please send the command
HELP in a line by itself in a mail message to listproc@u.washington.edu.
